    ITS and the Regional Council
Across the country, towns and cities of all sizes are applying advances in communication and computer technology to improve transportation. The purpose of these transportation technologies, called intelligent transportation systems, or ITS, is to improve the safety, efficiency, dependability and cost effectiveness of our transportation system.

Transportation technologies are strongly supported by the local, state and federal governments. In order to receive transportation funding for projects that involve ITS, jurisdictions must follow national and regional standards that are described in detail on this Web site. In general, the ITS standards require that proposed projects will work together with ITS systems from surrounding jurisdictions.

ITS strategies are an important part of the region's long-range transportation plan Destination 2030. The plan includes regional policies that will guide the selection of priority ITS projects. See the Objectives and Policies section for more information.

The Regional Council acts as a forum for the development of ITS projects. Briefings, standards and architecture, funding criteria, and other materials are available to assist jurisdictions in the development of ITS proposals and projects.
