Regional Design Strategy

In July 2006, the Washington State Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development awarded a grant to the Puget Sound Regional Council to develop design-related provisions for the VISION 2040 plan update and to create a coordinated strategy for addressing design at the regional level.

To coordinate this effort, the Puget Sound Regional Design Team, a dedicated group of volunteer urban design professionals, was formed. The team oversaw the crafting of draft multicounty planning policies and implementation actions, which have been incorporated into draft VISION 2040.

In June 2007, the team completed work on the Regional Design Strategy, which serves two purposes. First, the Strategy supports the goals of VISION 2040 with specific design concepts and strategies, as well as concrete tools and examples. Second, the Strategy links urban design to regional long-range planning in a way that can be useful to other regions and communities throughout Washington State.
