Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) describes technology-based transportation solutions that make better use of our existing roads. Listed below are just a few of the technologies being deployed. See a more comprehensive list and description of ITS applications.

  • 511 provides traveler information over the phone by dialing 511.
  • Incident management can reduce congestion by reducing the number of traffic incidents, clearing them more quickly when they occur, rerouting traffic flow around them.
  • Electronic toll collection as used on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
  • Automatic tracking of transit fleets and public safety fleets by using automated tracking and dispatch systems.
  • Automatic tracking of commercial fleets by using automated tracking, dispatch and weigh-in-motion systems speed vehicles through much of the regulatory process associated with interstate commerce.
  • Assist drivers in reaching a desired destination with navigation systems offering route guidance combined with congestion avoidance routing.

What are the benefits of ITS?

The many forms of ITS provide benefits that are only now beginning to be measured. ITS projects provide better traffic information, improved emergency response, greater safety on the region’s highways and better management of the region’s traffic. These technology-based solutions move traffic more efficiently and provide people more transportation choices.

  • ITS saves travelers time and money
  • ITS encourages people to use transit
  • ITS makes more efficient use of existing road networks
  • ITS supports the environment
  • ITS improves safety
