People with First Nations heritage in our region are very diverse, with over 50 Tribal groups represented.
About 7,700 of the region’s residents identify as Puget Sound Salish—a name the American Community Survey uses to group Tribes who have original homelands in the four-county region.
The region’s second most common Tribal grouping is Tlingit-Haida, who are Alaska Native peoples.
PSRC reports this demographic information with recognition that those who identify as American Indian and Alaska Native have historically been left out of data collection efforts and that further disaggregation of data and changes to how data is collected, analyzed and reported are necessary address structural racial inequities and discrimination.
We recently published more data about residents with American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage in spreadsheet format. It includes statistics on poverty and income, educational attainment, home ownership, life expectancy and more.
