Record-setting transit use has grown twice as fast as population since 2010. Annual fixed-route transit boardings reached nearly 187 million riders for 2016. This represents approximately 27 million more annual boardings compared to 2010. Fixed-route transit includes buses, light rail, street car and commuter rail.

Why Transit Boardings Matter

Transit boardings demonstrate how many people are taking transit. As more people use transit, it can reduce the number of vehicles on the road and the amount of ozone and carbon dioxide emitted into our air. A goal of the region's integrated land use and transportation plans is to increase the number of travel options available to people and to increase the amount of travel by modes other than the automobile.
