Downtown Edmonds named state’s first Creative District

Program aims to grow arts and creative economies

Downtown Edmonds has been designated Washington state’s first Certified Creative District by ArtsWA.

The Creative District program was approved by the state Legislature in 2017 to help communities grow their arts and creative economies.

Edmonds was unanimously selected, recognizing the city’s long-term commitment to arts and culture and its five-year work program to enhance the creative sector.

Designation as a Creative District benefits communities in a number of ways.

The state certification can attract more artists, entrepreneurs and creative businesses. And it helps a community create a focal point where people can gather and enjoy arts and cultural activities that reflect the community.

ArtsWA supports communities with this designation, providing grant funding opportunities, technical assistance and training, wayfinding signage and more.

ArtsWA accepts applications on an ongoing basis from communities in the state who are interested in achieving the designation. See more info at Creative District Community Application Guidelines to determine eligibility.
