Regional opportunities for autonomous electric vehicles

Presentation to Economic Development Board on Feb 7

Automated vehicle technologies, vehicle sharing services, and electrification of the vehicle fleet are likely to radically change the region's transportation system.

On Wednesday, the Economic Development Board will hear from Daniel Malarkey, a fellow at Sightline Institute and former Deputy Director of the Washington State Department of Commerce, on trends that could transform how people travel within cities.

Billions of dollars are being invested by car and technology companies towards development of automated vehicle technologies. Google, Lyft, and Uber are engineering automated vehicle technologies from offices in the central Puget Sound region.

All of these investments are pointing toward a future in which most people in urban areas will take trips in on-demand, autonomous, electric vehicles owned by fleet operators rather than individuals.

The region is taking steps to get ready.  The draft Regional Transportation Plan includes a new approach to leveraging emerging transportation technologies consistent with the region's policy goals.
