Regional passenger ferry terminal opens

Serving Kitsap Fast Ferry and King County Water Taxi routes

Ferry riders celebrated the opening of a regional passenger-only ferry terminal on the Seattle waterfront this week.

The new facility is covered, with more space and ADA features, including an elevator, tactile path and tactile signs for the visually impaired, and an ADA assistance station.

The terminal serves King County Water Taxi routes to Vashon Island and West Seattle and Kitsap Fast Ferry routes to Kingston and Bremerton. The Kitsap Fast Ferry is expected to expand service to Southworth next year.

The total cost of the project is $45 million, which includes the new building and the new float for boats to dock. PSRC contributed $21.6 million in regionally managed Federal Transit Adminstration funds to the project.

During construction, crews removed more than 7,000 tons of creosote-treated timber piles, capped contaminated sediments, and worked to minimize impacts to marine mammals. The new facility has earned a “Platinum” certification under the King County Green Building Program.

This project is one part of a larger effort to renovate Colman Dock, which is expected to be complete in 2023.
