KITSAP COUNTY - Kitsap Transit won a VISION 2050 Award from the Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) for the Silverdale Transit Center.

The innovative Silverdale Transit Center is one of the first transportation hubs in Western Washington with in-ground inductive chargers for electric buses. Buses simply drive onto a pad to be charged wirelessly, eliminating the need for plugging the vehicles in.

John Clauson, Executive Director of Kitsap Transit
“We’re honored to see this recognition for our Silverdale Transit Center. The transit center provides a central hub for our transit system in Kitsap County connecting Silverdale community members to jobs, healthcare and recreation, while enabling our electric bus fleet to operate more efficiently and recharge between trips by positioning the vehicle over inductive wireless charging infrastructure in the ground.”

Josh Brown, Executive Director of Puget Sound Regional Council
“The Silverdale Transit Center is an example of a thoughtfully designed transit project providing welcoming and creative solutions for Kitsap transit riders and operators alike with accessible covered waiting areas, bike parking and a driver comfort station.”

The Silverdale Transit Center creates a transit corridor linking Poulsbo, Silverdale, Bremerton, and Port Orchard, offering a fast, efficient alternative to driving that connects communities with major employers and residential areas across the county. The new transit hub allowed Kitsap Transit to create new routes to connect Silverdale residents from where they live to food, jobs and healthcare.

The transit center is also configured to incorporate accessible, covered waiting areas for passengers, an operator comfort station, bike storage and stormwater management.

PSRC contributed $13.5 million in Federal Transit Administration funds to the construction of the Silverdale Transit Center.

The VISION 2050 Awards celebrate progress to enhance the region’s communities and natural environment while advancing equity and opportunity for all. The awards recognize innovative work in the region to create a better future for the central Puget Sound.

The award was presented at the Kitsap Transit Board of Commissioners Meeting on July 1. The project team included Schemata Workshop (Architect), Parametrix (Prime Engineer)
and SCI Construction (General Contractor). Learn more about the Transit Center's design and construction.

VISION 2050 is the region’s plan for growth. By 2050, the region's population will reach 5.8 million people. The region’s cities, counties, Tribes, ports, agencies, businesses, and communities have worked together to develop VISION 2050 to prepare for this growth and serve as a guide for sustaining a healthy environment, thriving communities and a strong economy.
