PSRC is proud to announce the launch of a new pilot program to help address the extensive bridge maintenance and preservation needs across the region
The new program recognizes the unique role bridges play connecting the region’s communities and the seismic vulnerability of many. Development of the new 2026 Regional Transportation Plan showed that 88 of the region’s bridges are in poor condition and 64 need to be replaced. When bridges fail, it has catastrophic impacts on the communities that rely on them.
The pilot will take place over a two-year period and begin with the four counties, focused on immediately ready-to-go bridge replacement, rehabilitation or maintenance projects.
Three bridge projects were awarded funding in this first pilot:
- $1,297,500 for Cottage Lake Creek Bridge in King County
- $7 million for Chambers Creek Bridge in Pierce County
- $276,800 Short Span Bridge in Snohomish County.
The funding for this program comes from the supplemental funding action taken as part of annual rebalancing to achieve Federal Highway Administration’ project delivery targets to maximize use if federal funds. The amount of funding available in past supplemental funding actions fluctuates but has been up to $20 million in prior years.
The pilot program will be evaluated for expansion to cities. PSRC will develop a work program to further investigate bridge data and priority needs throughout the region. This will provide time for PSRC to work with partners to develop more specific parameters, should the program be continued and expanded into the future.
