New funding available for recreation planning

The Planning for Recreation Access program was recently created by the Washington State Legislature to encourage recreation planning in communities with insufficient access to outdoor recreation. The grants are intended to support collaboration between local governments, as well as planning and community engagement.

Applications open October 1.

VISION 2050, the region’s growth plan, calls for communities to provide parks, trails, and other forms open space within walking distance of urban residents. It also calls for the prioritization of historically underserved communities for open space improvements and investments.

The process and application have been simplified to make the program easy to use. In addition, support is available to help applicants.

More details about the grant will emerge this fall, and free application webinars will be held in September and October. Grants are expected to be awarded in December.
