Redmond Wins VISION 2050 Award

REDMOND - The City of Redmond has been recognized with a VISION 2050 Award from Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) for the Redmond Senior & Community Center.

The Redmond Senior & Community Center represents a bold investment in community connectivity, sustainability and inclusive design. The 52,000-square-foot center serves as a vibrant gathering place for one of the region’s fastest growing and most diverse cities. Since opening, the center has seen extraordinary community engagement, with more than 51,000 program participants and over 41,000 fitness passes sold.

The center is the city’s first all-electric community facility, powered in part by rooftop solar panels that generate up to 50% of the building’s energy. Use of climate-resilient wood earned national recognition and sets a new precedent for sustainable design.

Offerings for the community at the center include a multipurpose gymnasium with an indoor track, new cardio and weightlifting equipment, and a large multipurpose room with walls to subdivide the room, a commercial kitchen, and stage, and a large adjoining outdoor terrace with seating. The center also features a senior lounge and library, with computer terminals and coffee counter, and separate adjoining outdoor terrace, group exercise studio, classroom spaces, kid’s zone and locker rooms with showers.

Angela Birney, Mayor of Redmond
“We’re proud to celebrate the Redmond Senior & Community Center as a space that brings people from our city together across generations and backgrounds. With a focus on climate resiliency, the center was built with the community, for the community and provides a welcoming, flexible space where everyone can gather, play, and recreate.”

Josh Brown, Executive Director of Puget Sound Regional Council
“The Redmond Senior & Community Center is a model of forward-thinking urban design. It supports VISION 2050 goals by concentrating services in a walkable civic core, reducing emissions through its all-electric design, and fostering community cohesion with programming that celebrates cultural diversity.”

The Redmond Senior & Community Center sets a new benchmark for community facilities by blending sustainability, inclusion, and adaptability to meet the needs of an evolving city.

The VISION 2050 Awards celebrate progress to enhance the region’s communities and natural environment while advancing equity and opportunity for all. The awards recognize innovative work in the region to create a better future for the central Puget Sound.

The award was presented at the Redmond City Council Meeting on July 15.
