Sign-on to Ferry Funding Letter for Local Elected Officials

Show your support for continued emphasis on ferry system investments by signing on to a letter to Governor Bob Ferguson. The state has made great strides in restoring ferry service to pre-pandemic levels, through continued investments in crew retention and recruitment as well as the construction of three new hybrid-electric ferries. Our goal is to see these efforts sustained in the new year. If you are a local elected official, sign the letter by 5 p.m. on Friday, December 5.

Dear Governor Ferguson:

We are local elected officials from ferry communities across the Puget Sound region advocating for continued investment in Washington State Ferries (WSF).

Thank you for your leadership in supporting investments in the ferry system during the 2025 legislative session. We are grateful for your focus on restoring ferry service to pre-pandemic levels and continued investments in crew retention and recruitment. We appreciate the steps you are taking to get three new hybrid-electric ferries constructed and on the water as soon as possible. We would also like to express our appreciation for your commitment to hear from our communities that rely on regular ferry service to get to work and medical appointments, connect families and bring tourists to our communities during your first year in office.

Please ensure that ferry system investments remain a priority. With your leadership, Washington State Ferries restored ferry service to pre-pandemic levels this summer. However, maintaining this momentum will require sustainable resources to preserve current service levels, meet growing demand and support further progress.

Capital investments in WSF are essential to ensure the ferry system remains reliable, safe and sustainable. Much of the fleet and terminal infrastructure is aging and will require upgrades or replacement to avoid service disruptions. Modernizing the ferry system will lower long-term operating costs, prepare the system to adapt to changing transportation patterns and reduce emissions. Consistent capital investment is needed for the ferry system to meet the region’s current and future needs.

In addition to restoring full ferry service, WSF was also able to improve on-time service by 4.6% and add over 3,500 sailings. A well-staffed and skilled ferry crew is essential to maintaining these service improvements. WSF has made strides in workforce development, seeing continued success with pipeline programs for Licensed Deck Officers, launching a Terminal Career Development Program and hosting a Wiper Boot Camp. WSF has also developed programs to bring in new crew, including hiring Engine Room interns and continuing the Apprenticeship Program at Eagle Harbor. It is imperative that WSF continue to receive workforce funding needed to maintain these successes.

We respectfully urge your continued commitment to robust funding for Washington State Ferries. We remain deeply grateful for your leadership and the progress you have brought to this essential work.

Sincerely,
