On Thursday, June 25, 2026, the Puget Sound Regional Council’s (PSRC) Executive Board approved the redesignation of the region’s 10 manufacturing/industrial centers (MICs). This review showed that MICs continue to grow and represent an important role in the region’s economy, though some centers will be evaluated again in 2028 to track progress meeting requirements. This action completes the redesignation process for all centers, following the redesignation of the region’s 30 regional growth centers in March.
Regional centers are foundational to PSRC’s VISION 2050. Designated centers help accommodate new growth and are priority areas for PSRC-managed federal transportation funds. In 2024, MICs were home to 234,000 jobs, about 12% of all jobs in the region.
PSRC collaborated with local jurisdictions to evaluate how centers are performing across key criteria in the Regional Centers Framework. Most MICs were designated prior to today’s formal application criteria. This review, led by the Growth Management Policy Board, evaluated whether all centers meet current criteria. Five MICs are substantially meeting requirements, while the other five centers have conditions related to subarea planning, employment growth and industrial uses.
Through this review, PSRC boards discussed how the program can continue to evolve as the economy changes and centers mature. PSRC’s boards and committees will consider updates to the Regional Centers Framework later this year.
