PSRC has released findings from a public opinion survey on housing conducted last fall.
Overall, people believe that more housing helps their community. Nearly 80% of central Puget Sound respondents said that if done well, more housing would make their community better. That number jumped up to 83% in King County and lowered to 75% in Snohomish.
Central Puget Sound residents showed support for middle housing concepts in their responses with 61% agreeing that triplex housing should be allowed in single-family zones. Middle housing is multiple-unit housing that is at a scale and design that is compatible with single family housing. The survey also showed that 77% preferring new housing to be in walkable neighborhoods near town centers over places that are further from existing centers, and 83% agreeing that their community needs reasonably priced homes.
About the survey
PSRC collaborated with the Department of Commerce to ask people in the region and across the state what they think about housing needs. The statistically valid survey was conducted in 12 Washington counties from October 15 to November 6, 2022. Over 4,300 responses were received.
The goal of the survey was to explore attitudes about the central Puget Sound region and Washington State’s housing needs, outline housing desires, needs, and priorities of the general public and to provide regional decision makers with input from a broad cross-section of the public.
