A healthy and functional transportation system is one where people and goods can move around with ease. To better understand our present and plan for the future, PSRC has performed an analysis of our current transportation system, from the maintenance and preservation of our roadways and bridges, to traffic safety, and transit and ferry service.
Transportation System Needs
The Current Transportation System Report describes each element of the region's current transportation system, including an inventory of available facilities and services, key data and trends, and, where applicable, a high-level summary of identified system gaps. These gaps stem from the disconnect between where people and jobs are located today compared to existing facilities and services. This analysis provides the foundation for the 2026 Regional Transportation Plan and future planned system investments.
Key takeaways from the report include:
- The ongoing maintenance, preservation and timely replacement of ferry vessels and terminals is critical to ensuring the reliability of multimodal and passenger-only ferry service.
- People with mobility challenges due to age, income or disability continue to experience gaps in the transportation system, including limited-service coverage, lengthy travel times, and complex eligibility processes.
- Technologies that can support the system are not being fully utilized. For example, 85% of signals along corridors with frequent transit routes do not have transit signal priority and 32% of signals along severely congested corridors are neither coordinated nor include adaptive signal control.
